湯顯祖，字義仍，號海若、清遠道人、若士、繭翁，書齋號玉茗堂，江西撫州府臨川縣（今撫州市臨川區）人。生於明嘉靖二十九年八月十四日（公曆1550年9月24日）。嘉靖四十二年（1563）成秀才。隆慶四年（1570）中舉。萬曆十一年（1583）中進士，十二年八月赴任南京太常寺博士，十六年改南京詹事府主簿，十七年升南京禮部祠祭司主事。萬曆十九年閏三月上《論輔臣科臣疏》，五月貶廣東徐聞縣典史。九月赴貶所，二十年回到臨川家中，年底晉京，量移浙江遂昌知縣。萬曆二十一年三月到任，在任獎勵農耕，抑制豪強，興建相圃書院。萬曆二十六年初在北京上計後向吏部告假歸里，萬曆二十九年正月吏部大計，被以「浮躁」名義正式罷職，自此閑居，萬曆四十四年六月十六日（公曆1616年7月29日）去世。
