《21世紀大學英語（S版）閱讀教程》是一套以教育部《大學英語課程教學要求》為指導、緊扣大學英語四、六級考試閱讀新題型而編寫的閱讀教材。本套教材結合大學英語教學改革與發展的方向，以外語教學理論為指導，遵循「以人為本」的教學理念，強調大學英語的人文性及工具性。在教材的選材中，關注社會熱點問題，重視文章內容的時代性、信息性、知識性、多學科性及可讀性。
根據大學英語四、六級閱讀試題的要求，長篇閱讀不但要求學生對文章全篇內容能夠有所理解，同時也要求學生對文章的一些細節能夠把握，新題型對學生的宏觀概括總結能力則有較為明顯的提升要求，要求學生要將知識賦予運用轉換能力，不僅要讀懂，更強調測試考生在實踐語言環境中查詢有效信息的能力，還要對所掌握的信息積極地加工處理。鑒於此，本套教材以閱讀技能開篇，重視學生學習方法的訓練，強調學生的英語綜合應用能力的培養，增強閱讀信息獲取的能力，提高閱讀效能。本套教材適用於本科院校一、二年級非英語專業學生，可作為課堂教材或自學材料。本教程是《21世紀大學英語閱讀教程（3S版）》。
