本書從中國學者的視角，以翻譯文本類型（如宗教、科技、文學、社科等）和翻譯的方向（譯入、譯出）為經，以歷史上有影響的翻譯事件、翻譯者和翻譯思想為緯，勾勒中外翻譯實踐和翻譯思想的發展脈絡，在中外參照對比中突出中國豐富的翻譯實踐及其對中國文化發展的貢獻。本教材分為十章，涉及到中西翻譯發展時期、佛經及聖經在中國的譯介、聖經在西方的譯介、古希臘經典在歐洲的譯介、中國的科技翻譯、西方的科技翻譯、中國典籍在西方的譯介與傳播、西方文學經典在中國的譯介、西方非文學經典在中國的譯介、翻譯對中國文化的影響。從總體框架設計、具體史料選擇及對翻譯事實的解讀上都很好地做到了宏觀與微觀結合、史實與史識相融，囊括了翻譯史的主要內容。
