本教材的開發和編寫遵循了內容語言融合的教育理念(content and LanguageIntegration,CLI),圍繞主要英語國家的經典散文作品實施教學。以優質的文學語料作為教學內容,鼓勵學生對散文作品進行細讀,不僅可以幫助學生掌握語言知識和語言技能,還能對學生專業知識結構的構建及綜合素質的提升起到積極作用。 本教材以英語文學中的散文名篇為主要內容。全書分為15個單元,每個單元設置主課文一篇,補充閱讀課文一篇,課文內容依照同一主題進行編排,涵蓋了30篇膾炙人口的散文經典之作。課文選材充分考慮到學生的閱讀興趣、語言難度、篇幅長短等因素,併兼顧思想內涵與文學風格的多樣性。教材中各單元的主題涉及青春、友情、愛情、自然、死亡、習慣、時間、教育、文化、藝術等,既符合大學生的認知需求和情感取向,又易於與日常話題結合,能充分激發學生的閱讀興趣,有助於教師組織教學。
