本教材分為「Works」「Selected Criticism」與「Replaceable Works」三部分，旨在啟發學生見微知著，透過這一扇天腱窺見幾百年以來英文小說演變的概貌。編者萃取各種流派，不同時代，格調健康的長篇、中篇、短篇與小小說共計30篇（部），兼顧作品的思想性與可讀性、類型與風格、產生地域等因素。每篇（部）作品均附有題為「About the Author」與「About the Work」的兩種眉批，以及啟發批判性思辨的討論與寫作題目。甄錄於此的幾篇小說研究與批評雄文，或宏觀或微觀，或籠統或精專，皆有助於學生在精讀作品的基礎之上拓寬視野，升華認識，並初具小說理論素養。15篇備選作品可供教師在教學過程中根據具體情況選擇講授，亦可由學生課後自行閱讀。正文后附有「Glossary」和讀後感式範文，供學生揣摩賞鑒。 本教材適用於為英語專業本科生與研究生開設的「小說選讀」「作品與批評」等以閱讀為主，兼及批評性寫作的課程，亦可在為非英語專業本科生與研究生開設的閱讀課上使用。
