    本書是「索茉菲理論物理教程」的第四卷,主題是光學。「索末菲理論物理教程」包括力學、變形介質力學、電動力學、光學、熱力學與統計物理、物理學中的偏微分方程六卷,是作者給Muenchen大學和理工學院物理專業大三、大四學生講課的手稿整理而成的。索末菲老師教書是物理數學融合在一起的,關鍵是他還能實驗物理和理論物理一起教。索末菲的教學應該是深刻地影響到了不少人。他的教學非同於一般的教書匠,其教科書里融入了自己的理解還有自己對學術的貢獻。索末菲對物理學的貢獻是多方面的,即便面對愛因斯坦這樣的人物,也未必遜色多少。
