本書以當代美國具有代表性的三位女性劇作家瑪莎·諾曼、溫迪·華瑟斯坦和保拉·沃格爾的九部戲劇作為研究對象,綜合運用儀式理論、表演性理論和女性主義理論,探討儀式表演與女性自我建構、儀式與女性戲劇美學之間的關係。研究認為儀式具有很強的顛覆性、表演性和生成性,是劇中女性人物克服身份危機、實現自我賦權的實踐策略,也是劇作家組織戲劇行動、表現女性主義思想的戲劇技巧。同時還揭示了女性身份認同的表演性,闡明性別身份並不是本質的、固定不變的存在,而是身體重複執行準則、動作、姿勢和慾望的表演結果。

李淑玲,副教授,文學博士,碩士生導師,畢業於南京大學,現任教於中國礦業大學外國語言文化學院。主要從事英美文學、比較文學研究。在《當代外國文學》《外國文學動態研究》《四川戲劇》及Frontiers of Narrative Studies 等國內外學術期刊發表論文三十余篇,主編出版教材一部。主持完成中國外語教育基金、江蘇省社會科學基金、中國礦業大學青年基金三項研究課題,參與完成國家社科、教育部人文社科、江蘇省教育廳等五項研究課題。
