本文集共收錄三十一個篇章，分成六個部分。各部分收錄了四至六篇路德的重要作品。第一部分(五篇)主題為神學基本問題，路德嚴格依據《聖經》內容對此前的諸多闡述提出了自己的批判性解讀，特別質疑了當時佔據統治地位的經院神學。第二部分(五篇)主題為《聖經》教義，收錄了路德作為神學教授對《聖經》教義諸典籍的部分講授內容，以及路德作為重要的《聖經》德語譯者所作的幾則前言。第三部分(四篇)主題為基督之公義，闡釋了上帝之愛，這種愛與罪過之間、與通過信仰而獲得贖罪之間的關聯。第四部分(五篇)主題為聖禮，路德批判了基督教傳統上繁冗的儀式，但肯定了聖洗禮和聖餐禮兩種重要聖禮。路德詳細論述了聖洗禮和聖餐禮在傳播福音方面的重要意義，這是路德對基督教信仰正面的、建設性的闡釋。第五部分(六篇)主題為教會改革，針對備受民眾歡迎、但受到羅馬教宗冷酷鎮壓的路德宗教改革運動中湧現的大量問題和挑戰，這部分收錄的文獻正是路德對這類問題作出的部分回應。第六部分(六篇)主題為基督徒的生活，圍繞人與神的關係，體現了路德對人在此岸世界即現實生活中應該如何生活，同時牢記上帝在規訓和福音方面教誨的看法。
