1903年羅素出版《數學原則》一書,1910-1913年出版與懷特海合作花費十年完成的三大卷巨著《數學原理》。「他強烈地感到,《數學原理》儘管其重要性得到了公認,讀者卻寥寥無幾;但他深信,假如更多的哲學家理解了此書的內容,他們解決哲學問題的方式就會與過去大不相同,成果也要比過去多得多。」於是,他一直想寫一本數理哲學的普及本,此《數理哲學導論》于1918年在獄中寫成,1919年由英國George Allen & Unwin圖書公司出版。本次影印的是1919年版的1967年第12印次本。
