1903年羅素出版《數學原則》一書，1910-1913年出版與懷特海合作花費十年完成的三大卷巨著《數學原理》。「他強烈地感到，《數學原理》儘管其重要性得到了公認，讀者卻寥寥無幾；但他深信，假如更多的哲學家理解了此書的內容，他們解決哲學問題的方式就會與過去大不相同，成果也要比過去多得多。」於是，他一直想寫一本數理哲學的普及本，此《數理哲學導論》于1918年在獄中寫成，1919年由英國George Allen & Unwin圖書公司出版。本次影印的是1919年版的1967年第12印次本。
