威廉·梅克比斯·薩克雷（1811-1863），英國十九世紀傑出的批判現實主義作家，出生於印度加爾各答附近，六歲時被送回英國求學，成年後繼承了父親的遺產，但很怏揮霍殆盡，只好自謀生路，曾任雜誌專欄作者，撰寫了大量中短篇小說、長篇小說、散文、遊記、書評、一八四八年發表成名作《名利場》，奠定在英國文壇的地位。小說描寫孤女蓓基·夏潑，在英國十九世紀現實的名利場中抓住每個機會，鑽進上流社會的經歷。小說繼承了英國文學一貰的幽默諷刺，詞鋒犀利，機智敏銳，解剖人生和人性精妙入徽，有力鞭撻了十九世紀充滿污垢的上流社會。
