本書針對醫學專業國際期刊論文的特徵，用簡單易懂的語言系統地講解英文醫學學術論文所特有的語言要素、規範的語言表達、篇章結構布局、論證的邏輯性和寫作方法技能，並輔以大量的醫學期刊語篇範例分析與實踐練習，其語料主要選自SCI論文及其他相關材料；考慮到學生專業背景不同，本書採用了語言的共核理論(linguistic commoncore)為編程方針，引導不同醫學專業背景的研究生和大學生習得醫學英語寫作共同的語言特性和技能。
本教材共十二章，其中每一章節由三部分構成：1)闡釋相關理論和特定功能，幫助學習者歸納英語醫學學術論文寫作的規律和要求；2)通過閱讀和觀察相關原語料，體會和習得醫學英語寫作的語言特徵和規範用法；3)相關專項練習實踐。
