    這本書是我們1972年出版的《數論元素》一書的修訂版和擴充版。與第一本書一樣,我們設想的主要讀者群包括高等數學專業和研究生學生們,我們假設對抽象代數的標準本科課程有一定的熟悉度。即使沒有這樣的背景,在少量的補充資料的幫助下,第1-11章的大部分內容也可以閱讀閱讀。那個後面幾章假設有一些伽羅瓦理論的知識,在第16章和第18章中,有必要熟悉復變數理論。
