近年來，語言學研究發展迅猛，新成果不斷湧現。鑒於此，上海外語教育出版社邀請語言學界知名專家從約翰·本傑明斯出版公司(John Benjamins Publishing Company)等國際著名出版社推出的多種語言學期刊中精選最具代表性或前沿意義的優秀論文，按主題編為不同分冊，並撰寫中文導讀，組成「語言學國際學術期刊論文選」叢書，以幫助讀者了解語言學領域最新成果和發展動態，促進語言學研究的發展。
《語用與認知》(Pragmatics & Cognition)是具有重要國際影響力的跨學科期刊，主要刊發包括語言學、符號學、認知科學、神經科學、人工智慧等多個學科領域在內的優秀論文，旨在探究人類、動物和機器的符號系統之間的關係，及其與心理活動的聯繫。本書從中精選24篇文章，既有對語用與認知領域的理論和基本概念的探討，如言語行為理論、會話含義理論等，也有應用研究，涉及語篇理解、修辭格、話語分析、跨文化比較、非語言交際等內容。本書兼顧理論與實踐，前後銜接得當，可以幫助讀者對語用學以及語用與認知相結台的研究有更深入的理解。
