目前,國內學生在寫作的邏輯思維和條理性方面表現較差, 缺乏較強的分析、綜合、判斷、推理、思考和辨析能力,顯現出令人擔憂的「思辨缺席症」。針對這一現狀,我們編寫了這本思辨性寫作教材。該教材將「問題化」(problimatization)策略、綜合性分析能力、批判性思維能力、個人視角或觀點的表達等作為寫作的重點,通過寫作活動,掌握英語論辯寫作的思維方式、語篇組織模式或體裁知識,樹立讀者意識。另外,目前,國內大部分教材所涉及的論說文主要為「對某事發表看法或意見,以期說服對方」的一般性議論文,該教材則以學術性或研究性論說文(academic or research-based argumentation)的寫作為主要內容,通過對不同熱點及有爭議性問題的閱讀,設計寫作任務,引導學生進行資料寫作(source-based writing)。
