全書包含一個基礎測試和九個單元的學習內容。
教材的第一部分是有關寫作基礎的診斷性測試，主要檢測學生對英語高頻辭彙、基礎語法、標點符號及文稿格式的掌握情況。設置該部分的目的是讓學生了解自己之前學習中的薄弱環節，並能輔以有針對性的訓練以提高自身基礎英語水平，為後面的單元學習做好準備。
單元學習內容按照課文主題和寫作特點共分為九個單元。在每個單元內，又分閱讀(語言輸入)和寫作(語言輸出)兩個部分。閱讀部分包括課文和練習兩個板塊，從思想內容和語言兩個方面給學生提供輸入。寫作部分包含重要知識點的精講、分項練習及寫作輸出任務。全書九個單元寫作知識點的選取均以《大學英語教學指南》為綱。第一單元至第六單元圍繞基礎英語寫作，主要涉及英語段落的組織和展開、不同體裁及概要的寫作。第七單元至第九單元從學生的實際生活和將來工作的需求出發，囊括了個人簡歷、求職申請信、演講稿和論文摘要等類型的實用性及學術性寫作。每單元的寫作練習緊扣知識點，由淺入深、由易及難，循序漸進地幫助學生掌握單元重點和難點。而寫作輸出任務則充分體現了讀寫結合的教學理念，要求學生綜合運用單元目標知識和寫作技巧完成特定題目的篇章寫作。
